What's my name again?
My name is Nina and I’m a college student with some pretty big dreams. My two true passions in this world are writing and music, so I said “screw it” and combined them. I started this blog in order to gain more insight and broaden my music perspective. I found myself listening to the same bands, same songs and it was time to do some research. In order to make this journey as productive as possible, I thought it would be engaging if I documented my findings. And that brings us to where we are today :’)
The purpose of this blog:
I wanted to create something to call my own. I couldn’t be more pleased with the quality of the work already published on this site and I am excited to see where my blog takes me. It was originally intended for a portfolio purpose, but I am beginning to realize it is something I love to wake up and dedicate time to. The Mosh Spot forces me to exercise my writing ability and keeps my skills in check.
My curiosity to discover new artists eventually sparked my initial idea of creating this blog. I started off writing recreational articles about my friends who are local musicians. I would conduct “professional” interviews in their unfinished basements and we would make memories I will remember for a very long time. I want to touch people with my work, and I decided publishing my content would be the best way to do so. I want to inform the public about the latest news in the underground music community.
What are the “pretty big dreams” I mentioned in the first paragraph?
Before it was announced that The Vans Warped Tour was ending, I wanted to be a record label representative and interview bands on tour. Since the news broke (my heart), I decided to shift my focus to other large festivals hosted in the US and internationally as well. Being able to be a part of an established team such as Alternative Press, Loudwire, Revolver, Rock Sound, or Rolling Stone is what I am working towards. In order to prepare for the future, I am developing my own style and always looking to improve. I am most comfortable with print journalism at the moment, but I’m looking to expand into the broadcast field of the industry as I gain more experience.
Having The Mosh Spot evolve into the next big thing for music reporting would be pretty cool too. I will continue to post to this site even if I work for a label because it's what started it all. I plan to write pieces for this blog all throughout college and I am making a promise to myself that I won’t pass up the opportunity.
What bands make my ears bleed in just the right way?
The band that started it all for me was My Chem. All it took was one round of “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” on a prehistoric 4th generation iPod nano when I was eight years old. A decade rolled by and they are still my favorite band today. Below is a complete list of artists I actively listen to, organized by genre (alphabetically, of course).
Alternative: Adjust the Sails, Basement, The Front Bottoms, Hot Flash Heat Wave, Puddle Splasher, Remo Drive, Super Whatevr
Easycore: Bad Case of Big Mouth, Four Year Strong
Deathcore: After The Burial, Nekrogoblikon, Traitors, White Chapel
Hardcore: Every Time I Die, Gouge Away, Hatebreed, Knocked Loose, Old Wounds, SeeYouSpaceCowboy
Metalcore: A Day to Remember, Attila, BABYMETAL, Beartooth, Motionless In White, Of Mice & Men, Wage War
Nu Metal: System of A Down
Pop-punk: Hometown Losers, Mom Jeans., Neck Deep, Real Friends, Sorority Noise, State Champs, The Story So Far, When In Doubt
Post-hardcore: Falling In Reverse, Get Scared, Movements, My Chemical Romance, Pierce The Veil, Rise Against, The Used, The White Noise (r.i.p.)
